Referral marketing has been around for quite some time. It has been around ever since people have been able to tell one another about products and services they enjoyed.
Once companies realized that this was a form of marketing several of them decided to make use of it by setting up networks. This form of marketing uses people who are either referred to as agents, members, distributors, dealers or affiliates to both sell. They do this simply by letting other people know about the products or services and to find new people to spread the word about the product or service. This type of marketing has been known by several names such as network marketing or multi-level marketing and most recently multi-tiered affiliate marketing.
In the past most if not all programs that employed these strategies had either a once a year fee or a monthly qualification of sales. Many usually involved the affiliate spending $25 to $100 a month or more to qualify for commissions. These type of programs are not bad and are in fact great for companies that are actually selling products or services that take a lot of work in order to offer.
Now there are new types of programs. Companies that will pay you for clicking on ads, reading emails, completing offers, filling out forms, doing surveys, finding new friends and getting page views, and responding to discussions.
There is no cost to participate in these companies unless you want to pay for a one time upgrade. Several of these companies pay on more than one level making them similar to network marketing programs.
With several of these programs it is possible to earn advertising as an option instead of cash. You could either build a group full of several active referrals and have a hundred or a few extra hundred dollars per month or you could use some of the income to join a traditional product driven network marketing company. In such a case you could be using the pay to click and other such companies as feeder programs.
Do not dismiss these small free programs as junk programs as they have a great role to play in this new era of referral marketing.
